Every city I land in - I try to seek out a Tiki Bar or a Tiki Lounge that is a throw back to the 1950's and 1960's where a drink was called a cocktail and a man's wardrobe included twelve different pairs of cuff links.
Sadly, I find few of these types of lounges - but not because I don't look, Maybe they don't exist anymore. Maybe they never did.
The watering holes I do find might have a hint or two of the lounge scene - there might be a bit of Tiki here and there. Sometimes, the thing that gets me to the club is simply the word "lounge" at the end of the name.
Maybe the Tiki lounge is simply a wanting figment of my imagination conjured up by listening to too many UltraLounge cd's. It still seems there should be more creative entrepreneurs that would figure out that this kind of hip lounge would be something that might thrive in the right metropolis.
Just think of all the new people that would dig the swank sounds of Les Baxter and Martin Denny. People that otherwise will never hear a full catalog of this sultry seductive music.
It would be cool to see a city embrace a scene like that. Until then - I will just have to keep looking.
