Is the wick of a tiki torch supposed to waste away immediately after lighting it?

yes, then, since tiki torch fluid burns as a gas, it should continuously burn with virtually no wick
The top will be singed to a stiff, burnt wick and burn so long as the wick is absorbing the oil.
no….cheap torches give you cheap wicks. you might want to stop at a hardware store or wherever and pick up some decent wicks and oil. the oil is suppose to continually saturate the wick and when it burns, it burns the oil off the wick.
