How can I remover the black mold on our tiki bar?
Bonduesa asked:
We put a new tiki bar outside, by our pool and now, after this winter it has turned black with mold and looks terrible! Is there any way to turn it back to light brown color that it was? We did weatherize it with a urathrene coating before setting it out. I thought bamboo is made to hold up in wet weather?

Maybe its dead :S if not sand it or something and then re coat.
Bar Tenders Friend, its like Comet
Bleach works best on mold, but test it first so it doesn’t discolor the bar.
Bamboo holds up fine in wet weather. Mold is normally an issue of insufficient sunlight or airflow. My best guess is your urethane coating, although protecting the bamboo from weather, also prevents the water from being absorbed so that it sits, causing the mildew.
Starbright boat mildew remover is the best, least impact mildew remover I’ve ever used. But likely, you should be able to use a pressure washer, and blast the mildew away. I would use at least a 45 degree nozzle several inches away to prevent tearing up the bamboo.
You’ll need to increase the sunlight or add airflow to prevent this in the future.
you could quickly sand it off or power wash it, further mold prevention is the hard part, you may have to power wash every spring, if you bring it inside in the winter you can avoid
Make sure you wear a mask, goggles and gloves when doing any black mold removal, if the mold is toxic it can cause serious health affects when cleaning it even if it’s outside, take the right steps!
This reminds me of a case were someone had black mold growing on a outside patio they went out there and started to take it apart and use bleach, etc to clean it. Within 24 hours they had to go to the E.R and almost died…. Come to find out the mold they were cleaning was stachbotrys which is a very toxic form of mold that can cause health affects that can last for months or years once you have full blown contact with it when removing.
Be SAFE! your a pro!
